Write what matters.

I think more people should write books. Not because you get to become an “author,” but because it’s a transformative experience, one that is deeply satisfying. I love helping people shape books that help bring forth the boldest version of what they care about.

My Favorite Kind of Book Is What I Call “Memoirish” Non-Fiction

Memoirish books combine raw personal storytelling and center the author in the book. They communicate a clear and strong worldview, without hedging. They are a transfer of energy from the author to reader. Typically, writing this kind of book is transformative, it pushes the writer to push the edges on their skills as a writer, and their ability to get down to the essence of what they want to say.

Memoirish books aren’t aimed at building authority or establishing credibility in a space. They don’t aim to be actionable and practical as a first priority. They aim to inspire through the sharing of an honest personal account of what matters most to the author.

I don’t do this as a living and like working with a specific kind of person

While I am generally a pretty relaxed and easygoing person, I take creative work very seriously. I get very excited about the creative potential of work and when I see opportunities to improve things, I want to push people there as fast as possible.

We’d likely work well together if

You are someone:

  • You actually like writing or at least don’t see it as 100% grind
  • Who is comfortable with direct feedback focused on the work and does not attach your identity to your first draft
  • Who gets excited when someone points out opportunities in your writing, even if you don’t agree. You always find some new path to take.
  • Can work asynchronously and act on detailed written reflections on your work
  • Wants to write something that is coherent and has a consistent energy
  • Knows they will finish

Not for you if:

  • You want to follow the standard nonfiction playbook and don’t want to take creative risks
  • You don’t want to go deeper beneath surface level stories – I tend to push people deeper, asking “okay why does this matter?” or “I don’t buy this story, what’s really going on.”
  • You need an accountability coach. I don’t really believe in holding people accountable for creative work. I think you should only do work you want to be doing and will leave motivation up for you to solve.
